The New Albany Symphony Orchestra (NASO), now in its eighth season, is a community orchestra bringing music to life in New Albany, Ohio, and proud to call the Jeanne B. McCoy Community Center for the Arts home. Founded in 2007 by New Albany resident and violist Heather Garner and founding conductor Luis Biava, the New Albany Symphony Orchestra is comprised of over 120 community, student, and professional musicians from all over the Columbus metro area. NASO was designed by its founders to be a true community orchestra, in which a unique model of talented students, professional mentors and community musicians would combine and work together on one stage.  NASO’s annual four-concert-series provides high level performances for our audiences and free educational outreach in our schools.  Our annual student concerto competition attracts students from across the state of Ohio and our nationally recognized guest artists position New Albany on the map as a center for artistic excellence.  Some of our past guest artists include Grammy award winning cellist David Finckel, world-class pianist Jon Kimura Parker, Pulitzer Prize nominee Augusta Read Thomas, and one of the top 5 violinists in the world – superstar Hilary Hahn.

2016 Honoree, Dr. Glyde Marsh

Dr. Glyde Marsh came to New Albany in 1946 after serving as a military police officer for four and a half years in World War II, where he personally witnessed some of the most significant events of the 20th century.  He was in Paris when Germany surrendered, witnessed the concentration camps in Germany and was in route to Japan when that country surrendered. His final rank was Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army.

When he came back to Ohio after the war he decided to go to vet school.  His father showed chickens when he was a young boy and he enjoyed the farm life growing up in rural northeastern Ohio.  While working at The Ohio State University, where he would become one of the pre-eminent poultry veterinarians in the country, he asked university staff where cheap land was available.  “My wife and I wanted to start a family and everyone kept telling me the cheapest land anywhere in central Ohio was in New Albany,” said Marsh.   “At the time, I paid $85 an acre.  Times have certainly changed.”

During his career as a professor at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Sciences, he was active in the community.  “My wife Margaret (who has since passed away) was the real mover and shaker in the family,” added Marsh.  “She always wanted me to be involved, and here I am more than 70 years since I served my country in World War II and I’m still involved.”

Dr. Marsh retired from Ohio State in 1985 but he never retired from community service.   After being re-elected in November 2013, he has now been elected to New Albany Council six times.  Prior to that, he served three terms as a school board member and he has been a poll worker in elections since 1954.  In the sixty years since, he missed working just one election, when he was hospitalized with a broken leg sustained while delivering keys and supplies to a precinct official the night before the election occurred.

Today, Dr. Marsh still travels 20,000 miles a year across Ohio serving some of the same poultry clients since the 1950s. At the young age of 97, Dr. Marsh has been recognized by the Ohio House of Representatives as the oldest elected official in our state and was recently inducted into the Central Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame. We are delighted to have him represent the Independence Day 5K as our 2016 Honoree.
